Origins of UL&FM
The UL&FM standard (Underwriters Laboratories and Factory Mutual) is an American standard that has been put in place to guarantee the safety and reliability of stationary pump units. This standard was developed by two independent organizations, UL (Underwriters Laboratories) and FM (Factory Mutual), who worked together to develop performance and safety criteria for stationary pump sets.
Requirements
The UL&FM standard includes requirements for the construction and operation of stationary pump sets, as well as performance criteria for pumps, motors and controllers. Construction requirements include requirements for corrosion resistance, vibration and shock resistance, and storm resistance. Operating requirements include requirements for pump speed and pressure, as well as temperature and pressure of the pumped liquid.
To be UL&FM compliant, stationary pump sets must pass rigorous tests to verify their performance and safety. These tests are performed by independent laboratories accredited by UL and FM. If a stationary pump set passes the tests, it can be UL&FM certified and used for applications that require compliance with this standard.
